The best time to visit Petra, month by month
Last checked: November 2026. Prices and hours change — confirm with visitpetra.jo or pdtra.gov.jo before you travel.

Petra is open all year, but the season decides what kind of day you will have. Heat limits what you can climb in summer; cold and flash floods can close the Siq in winter. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots. Here is each month, grouped by season, with the one warning that matters most.
The short answer
- Best overall: March to May.
- Best for photography and fewer people: mid-October to November.
- Hardest: June to August for heat; December to February for cold and flood closures.
Month by month
March, April, May
Wildflowers in the wadis, 20–28 °C, the best all-round window. Book beds early.
This is peak season for good reason. Days are warm enough for the long climbs and cool enough to do them in daylight. Hotels near the gate fill up first — book beds early, especially for weekends.
June, July, August
35 °C+ and hard shade only in the Siq. Enter at opening, leave by noon.
Enter at opening and plan your hardest walk for the first hours. Rest in the middle of the day and go back in for late light if you have a two-day ticket. Carry three litres of water per person; heat and dehydration are the most common reasons visitors need help.
September, October, November
Warm stone, low light, thinner crowds after mid-October. Excellent for photography.
September is still hot; October and November are the second sweet spot. The low sun brings out the colour in the rock. November is also the start of the wet season, so watch the forecast.
December, January, February
Cold mornings near freezing and occasional flash-flood closures — pack layers.
Mornings can be close to freezing and the site closes earlier, at 16:00. Days are often clear and quiet, which makes winter rewarding if you pack layers and keep plans flexible around rain.
Flash floods and closures
Between November and March, rain on the surrounding hills can send water down the Siq and the side gullies very quickly, even when it is not raining where you stand. The authorities close the Siq and some trails without much warning when this happens. Al-Khubtha, for example, closes in rain because its gullies funnel floodwater.
- Check the forecast the night before and in the morning.
- Follow staff instructions immediately if you are told to leave.
- Never shelter in a side gully or narrow canyon during rain.
- Watch for closure notices on pdtra.gov.jo and visitpetra.jo.
If you visit in the wet season, build a spare day into your plan so a closure does not cost you Petra altogether. The emergency page lists who to call.
The best time of day
Whatever the month, the gate opening at 06:00 is the best hour of the day. The Siq is cool and nearly empty, and the Treasury catches soft light. The site closes at 18:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter. Save the Monastery and the Royal Tombs for late afternoon light, and see Petra by Night if you are there on a schedule night.
Crowds and holidays
Spring is the busiest season. Crowds thin after mid-October. Whatever the month, the difference between arriving at opening and arriving at 10:00 is larger than the difference between seasons.
Common questions
- What is the best month to visit Petra?
- March to May is the best all-round window, at 20–28 °C with wildflowers in the wadis. October and November are a close second, with warm stone and thinner crowds after mid-October.
- Is Petra too hot in summer?
- June to August regularly exceeds 35 °C with hard shade only in the Siq. It is doable if you enter at 06:00 and leave by noon, but long climbs like the Monastery are risky in midday heat.

- Yes. Between November and March, flash floods can close the Siq with little notice. Follow staff instructions immediately and never shelter in a side gully.
- What time of day is best at Petra?
- Opening time, 06:00. The Siq is cool and quiet for the first hour. Late afternoon is best for the Monastery and the Royal Tombs.
